The fields are so beautiful you almost hate to cut! |
In Germany, from the middle of the summer to the middle of
September, you find open fields of ‘cut your own’ flowers. Don’t know if there is anything like
this in the states, but my suspicious mind doubts it. These roadside businesses run themselves, completely
dependent on the civility and honesty of the public.
Nobody watches you cut. Nobody checks to see if you pay, or hears the clink of coins
falling into the box. A sign gives
you instructions, prices, and tools.
Often you're alone in the field.
You wander, pick, cut, pay, and leave. Simple as that.
I’ve never heard of one of these flower fields being
vandalized, or the cash box being broken into. For an American, this is an amazement that ranks with the
invention of Saran Wrap, the power of faith healers, and David Copperfield’s
vanishing elephants.
This sounds fantastic! What I'd give to be around a field of flowers! Especially if nobody was there to tell me not to run with the scissors...
ReplyDeleteWonderful isn't it.
ReplyDeleteActually, I've seen something similar in New England. During blueberry season, on the back-roads, you can pick your own berries from the various farmers.
Driving by, you see small "pick your berries" sign. You pay a bit extra if you need a container. No farmer in sight, cash box always maintained, the blueberries are the size of cherries and delicious.
California is definitely so trusting with it's strawberries fields.
Used to get our eggs the same way in East Anglia. Trays full of free range eggs on a table by the road, along with a coin box.
ReplyDeleteBest eggs I've ever had.
Eman, I see lots of strawberry sellers, but none unattended.
ReplyDeleteMSgt B, haven't seen unattended egg stands either. But, like you, I think the eggs on this side of the pond are the freshest and tastiest I've ever had! Fresh and free range are the keys! Once you have them like that, you'll yearn for breakfast! Also, see my post about A Full English breakfast....best in the world! Headed to London in the near future and my mouth is watering for breakfast....and BEER!
Oops, typo, should read:
ReplyDeleteCalifornia is definitely NOT so trusting with it's strawberries fields.
Blueberries I stand by.
