She Was A Woman That I knew

She was a woman that I knew,

When I was young

And she was younger.

A blur of love or maybe less.

Infatuation colors the minds of the young

Bright streaks of scarlet, hues of gray

And everyday a new rainbow.

And sorrows piled high in the shiny

Barrow of the young.

Her eyes so blue, her face a mask

Of beauty and smiles,

That touched my heart

And rested in my needs. Oh, yes!

A summer swim in sun so bright

It burned the imagination,

And water so cool even the air glistened

Hello my darling.

Goodbye my love.

And now that I am old,

Near forgotten love

Bends me to the days

When I was young

And she was younger.

Floating Memories

Shall beauty rein in depths profound

Wrapped within her evening gown

The whisper of her satin sighs

The stardust in her silvered eyes?

How drifts the memories once more

The promises they held in store

Until she floated from my glance

The dying sparkles, bereft romance.

I still remember moments clear

The moments when she seemed so near

And fantasies that ruled my mind

The days long gone and yet I find

The beauty of the past lives on

And though the past is ever gone

Countless nights and countless dawns

Sweet memories linger on and on.

My Lover Says It’s Hot Today

With Apologies to William Shakespeare

My Lover Says It’s Hot Today

My lover says it’s hot today
And sweat pervades her every pore.

I say she’s covered with the dew
On glistening skin that I adore.

She asks me if her hair’s in place
And runs her fingers through the curls

I say its fine in every way,
Her hair shines as the sun on pearls.

You try to be on my good side
A sparling gleam now in her eye.

You have no bad side, I maintain
You’re fair from north and south, I sigh.

And she smiles so broadly now,
And what about the west and east?

All across the compass rose,
Your radiance will yet increase.

Your eyes are blinded by the sun
But, when I’m covered by the shade?

Even in the darkest night
Your fulsome beauty will not fade.

Nor drift away, nor ‘ere decline
Even in sweet morning’s sun

And when the darkness does descend
Yes, even then my heart succumbs

Yes I had to memorize this in high school, and the words and rhythm and beautiful flow have stuck with me.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines
And often is his gold complexion dimmed:
And every fair from fair sometimes declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

My Lovely Butterfly

A short poem from a faraway land known as boyhood.

She came to me, sweet butterfly
Softly, gently flower to flower.

Her wings enveloped with delight,
At my time to fill her lips, for

Nectar sweet I had to give
And give I did with all my heart.

A magic moment, just as
Fast as wings aflutter

Left a memory that lasts
And harbors still within my dreams.

I never knew to which new
Rose or daffodil or other garden.

It was enough to feel the brushing
Of her lovely wings.

A lover’s kiss

                             A lover’s kiss

Come lie beside me softly, and share a lover’s kiss
And while passing not a word, absorb ourselves in bliss

Wind your arms around me love, cast off the cares within
For surely from the core of heaven comes this warmth again.

There is no struggle in our world, the private world we share
It comforts every longing with us lying there.

Just as the moon arises to replace the setting sun
A single kiss can light our way and sorrows overrun.

And oh the strength of touching, how it overcomes our need
As wistful as the willow, the lightness of a breeze.

So cling to me and pass the night just as I cling to you
Allow the strength and joy to flow, and our love renew.

                             ---William Stroud
